Saturday was such a wash..

Hey everyone today it rained really hard and all of the plants that went into the ground yesterday all look really good today.  Someone was musing to me that I only write about my garden and not about geeky things anymore.  I had to explain to her that this is my geek gasam and geek is a general term for being passionate about something and knowing and learning all the crazy fun things about it.  What I love about gardening is that it is like a science project that is always changing and I am constantly learning stuff.  I keep a log of the changes and I look up the facts and science of the things I am growing and what I want to grow in the future. It’s a totally science approach to what is going on and it inspires me to more experiments.

I had mentioned that I am going to start building my tiny house and I have made a plan to start with building a mobile greenhouse so that I can take it with me when I move.  This is going to let me learn what I need about building things and also have a greenhouse for when I am attending school for Horticulture science at OSU.  I am now officially accepted into PCC so that I can start my transfer degree and I am hoping that I can get all the classes I need inside 18 months but I am okay if it takes longer.  Everything is up in the air right now because I still need to take my placement tests and working on the the scholarships.  For right now I am just getting more organized so that I can go back to school and that is fun but it’s still a ton more work that I was thinking at first.

If anyone wants to help me raise the money to go back to school that would be amazing as I need to gather $8,000 for the Fall term at PCC.  I hope everyone has a wonderful and science filled day!

More Gardening with Moxie

Here is a lovely video of my garden and I have just put some Zucchini in the ground so I am looking forward to making this recipe later.

Zucchini Pancakes!

This zucchini pancake recipe marries the warm-spiced flavors of zucchini bread with the ease of quick and healthy whole-grain pancakes. When topped with maple syrup and pecans, these zucchini bread pancakes make an irresistibly delicious breakfast. If you don’t have pumpkin pie spice, use 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon, 1/4 teaspoon ground ginger and 1/8 teaspoon each ground nutmeg and cloves.

2 cups shredded zucchini
1 1/4 cups white whole-wheat flour or all-purpose flour
2 teaspoons baking powder
1 teaspoon pumpkin pie spice blend
1/4 teaspoon salt
2 large eggs
1 cup plus 2 tablespoons low-fat milk
2 tablespoons melted butter
2 tablespoons light brown sugar
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1/2 cup toasted pecans, chopped

Put shredded zucchini in a clean kitchen towel and squeeze to remove as much moisture as possible.
Whisk flour, baking powder, pumpkin pie spice and salt in a large bowl. Whisk eggs, milk, butter, brown sugar and vanilla in a medium bowl. Make a well in the center of the dry ingredients, add wet ingredients and whisk until combined. Fold in the zucchini and nuts.
Coat a large nonstick skillet (or griddle) with cooking spray; heat over medium heat. Cook pancakes in batches, using a scant 1/3 cup batter for each and spreading it to make them about 4 inches wide. Cook until bubbles dot the surface, 1 to 3 minutes. Flip and brown on the other side, 1 to 2 minutes more. Reduce the heat if the pancakes are browning too quickly. Serve hot.
Toast nuts before using in a recipe for the best flavor. To toast whole nuts, spread on a baking sheet and bake at 350°F, stirring once, until fragrant, 7 to 9 minutes. To toast chopped, small or sliced nuts, cook in a small dry skillet over medium-low heat, stirring constantly, until fragrant and lightly browned, 2 to 4 minutes.

Wipe out Wednesday

Okay I admit it I am terrible at keeping up at doing the blog since I lost my job but I think of everyone here all the time, promis.  Anyway I told you that I am going back to school and that is awesome of course.  Everyone knows how much I love tiny houses and so I have decided to take the plunge and in the next week I am going to be picking up a trailer to start this transition.

As soon as I find the cable to my camera I’ll upload some photos of the progress and also of the garden that looks amazing right now.  But I am still here and I am working really hard to get things together.

I wish all of you the best of luck with all of your projects in life.

Monday is the leader of the band

Hello world!

Everyone who has been reading my blog or chatting with me online or in person knows how much I love gardening, plants in general and my obsessive nerdiness about it.   I’ve been employed by call centers doing customer service since 1999 and I have done it well but that hasn’t made me happy and with two cancers under my belt I think a change is due.  I am going to be stopping by PCC and will be working on a Transfer degree for Horticulture.  I am going to be pouring my energy into making this happen with finding grants and scholarships to pay for this.

I’ll be bring you updates on this and my garden with new photos this week!  Happy Monday and may it be a good start to your week.

Lost Monday

I have lost my cable for my camera for my garden and that makes me sad because my garden is doing really well.  Moxie is thinking I am just messy and I should clean my house and I would find it.  I told her she should start and show me how and her response was to roll over and tempt me with rubbing her belly.  That is why I can never get things done.. there is always a belly that needs to be rubbed.

But I should get to finding that cable so that means today will be busy with the cleaning and organizing.. but it is so pretty outside and there is the cat too.  I don’t hold out much hope for me to get much done but I will do my best.

Oh I applied for a job at OMSI the Science Museum here in Oregon and while I will likely not get it but it would be fun to be in a job where I can nerd out.

Garden With MOXIE!

I decided to do some gardening today and plant some of my easter seeds I got from my mother seen below.

Moxie decided that she wanted to help in the garden after she inspected the goodies in the pot.   We had to wait a few weeks to garden because it was all rainy for April but that was a very good thing.

Moxie then decided we needed to inspect the garden and what was already growing.

Oh before I show you all that here is a shot of the peas that I planted just 3 days ago.

Okay back to the Garden with MOXIE

The flowers look good but lets look at the veggies…

I guess she is okay with the purple onions so onto some just garden watching…

Okay this is Moxie telling me it’s time to go back inside where I can give her food.  Hope everyone has a wonderful day today!

Soggy Snow

Today I was able to get out of my apartment and it was so soggy getting down the plowed road but it was also fun.  When I am stuck at home I always have my radio tuned to OPB my local public radio station and while the news reports get old it is still nice to get some of the nice programs.  I like being home and listening to all of the shows and then to turn off the radio and enjoy the quiet of the snowy days we’ve had. Just outside of my door I was able to spy the poor birds trying to find food and warmth and I made me want to have some seeds to throw out for them.  I was thinking just a few weeks ago that I was going to dig up and turn over the soil for my garden and I am glad I did not.  But I am eager for the rain to wash away the snow even if I did like it I want to enjoy the rain of spring so that I can be able to plant by March and April.

Planting a garden this year is going to be my main project for the year I think but I am also going to be working with a friend to build a pair of beehives with a friend.  The other project is I am going to be helping a friend set up a chicken coop in his side yard.  It may seem like a bit to take on but mostly I am going to be working on the gardening I am actually just helping with the other projects.  By helping I mean doing the research and find the materials at a good prices so that it wont break the budget. Honestly it is really a way for me to put together spreed sheets that I love and then to get some experience with two things I want to do later on when I have my own place.

So I love my alone time and time with friends but mostly I love projects and getting inspired.  I hope that everyone finds something to be inspired by today.

Garden Dreams

Yup it’s the last week in January and all I can think about having a real garden to plant in this year.  We are going to have drought conditions in most places and strange wildfires in California and Oregon currently.  There are other things trying to distract me like the Syrian conflict, shootings in the U.S., the Winter Olympics but with all of the problems out there I just want to grow something.

I was asking my friend about her gardening plans and she let me know about another friend who was looking to split some seeds and order through the same company.  She also said that another person was wanting to do a Start exchange.  So of course I went crazy and created a spreadsheet in about an hour and copied and pasted planting and seeds for the right month and dreaming up this great network.

After taking a few bits to the grinding stone with the input of some folks my spreadsheet was done.  I think my crazy was a bit too much but I am just so excited about having a garden this year and not just pots.  My hope is that I can just get a few things to grow and that I can harvest a 3rd of what I can put in the ground.

Good luck everyone and never let anyone tamp down your excited feelings about gardening if you do it will never grow.

Schedule Change

Today I have off because of my wonderful schedule change and I think I may have slept for 11-12 hours…  Okay so I um didn’t sleep much the last week and then Saturday night folks just pushed me right over the edge of manageable crazy so I really did not sleep.   That means Sunday was amazing for me and the folks around me enjoying the radiant glow of my sleep debt.   I finally got done with things that needed to get done on Sunday around 6pm ish and then I went to bed.  I woke up around 6am this morning and been slowly becoming awake.

So the plan for today is to enjoy my recalibration of sleep cycle and schedule.  I will be going shopping then likely I will garden a bit.
